Functional Psychopharmacology I

I. COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course offers a comprehensive review of the fundamentals of psychopharmacology as well as valuable concepts that attempt to integrate psychopharmacological topics with clinical practice. It presents practical information on the benefits, side effects, and common drug-drug interactions. This course will address the various classes of Psychopharmacology for the various psychiatric categories of illnesses including anxiety, affective disorders, schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. These factors include biological, neurotransmitter, psychological, psychosocial, and environmental factors.
This course will focus on the following topics:

1) Common medications prescribed for mental health diagnosis including Benzodiazepines, atypical antidepressants, Buspirone, Hydroxyzine, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, Lithium, Valproate, Divalproex, and others.
2) Limitations and benefits, patient perceptions, and treatment expectations regarding psychopharmacological treatment
3) Practitioner-patient partnership, including its impact on patient education, medication adherence, efficacy, adverse effects and response to side effects, and their impacts on the therapeutic relationship
4) Building strong medical provider-clinician partnerships to optimize patient outcomes
5) The development and implementation of an organized treatment plan that addresses both clinical and pharmacological interventions

Course participants will be expected to have had clinical experience, as well as an understanding of the basic therapeutic mechanisms of psychotropic medications. There will be considerable opportunity for interaction with the instructor.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

 At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Understand the role of psychopharmacology in clinical practice
Possess a basic understanding of the systemic effects of drugs and issues of tolerance and interactive effects with other drugs
Be familiar with the common medications used for different psychological disorders
Develop a basic understanding of the integration and collaboration of mental health care into medical and other settings using psychopharmacological treatments
Develop your critical thinking skills about the role of medications in the treatment of psychological disorders and human suffering to best advocate for the welfare of clients

 CANCELLATION POLICY

 A full refund will be issued for all cancellations received 15 days prior to the start of the course.  Refund requests must be received by email.  No refund will be issued should a cancellation occur less than 15 days prior.  No-shows are subject to the full course fee, and no refunds will be issued once the conference has started.
